“Should I convert to salt?” is one of the questions we hear most from Valley homeowners. Saltwater pools are hugely popular in Arizona — but the marketing often oversells the reality. Here’s the straight version, based on servicing both systems across Phoenix every week.
First, the Big Misconception
A saltwater pool IS a chlorine pool. The salt chlorine generator (SCG) simply makes chlorine on-site from dissolved salt via electrolysis, instead of you adding it as tablets or liquid. Sanitizing chemistry in the water is fundamentally the same — what changes is how the chlorine gets there, how stable it is, and what maintenance looks like.
Why People Love Salt in Arizona
- Silkier-feeling water and less of the harsh chloramine smell
- Steady, continuous chlorination — a real advantage against our heat-driven chlorine burn-off
- No hauling and storing chlorine tablets (whose price swings have been painful)
- Less cyanuric acid accumulation than a tab-fed pool, which matters in our climate
The Arizona-Specific Downsides Nobody Mentions
- Hard water + salt cells = scale. Our high-calcium water scales generator cells fast. Cells need inspection and cleaning several times a year here, and neglect kills them early.
- Cell replacement is a real recurring cost. Cells typically last 3–7 years; Arizona heat and scale push toward the short end without good care.
- Salt + soft stone don’t mix. Saltwater splash-out is hard on flagstone, some travertine, and certain deck finishes common in Valley backyards.
- It’s not maintenance-free. You still test and balance weekly — pH tends to drift up in salt pools, which feeds scale in our water.
So Which Should You Choose?
If you love the feel, hate handling tablets, and are prepared to maintain the cell (or have a weekly pool service that does), salt is a great fit in Arizona — most of our clients with salt pools are very happy. If your budget is tight, your decking is soft stone, or your pool already fights calcium scale, a well-managed traditional chlorine program is every bit as clean and safe, for less capital cost.
